Design and build

Custom electronics

Schematic, board, firmware and enclosure from one workshop, and it updates over the air after it leaves it.

  • One workshop
  • CAN bus
  • Encrypted updates

01 / The problem

Who owns the result?

Bespoke electronics usually passes through several hands. One party draws the board, another writes the firmware, a third makes the housing, and nobody owns the result when it misbehaves in the car.

The seams between them are where the schedule goes and where the fault hides.

02 / The whole chain

Everything in one workshop

Every step is done here, so each one is designed knowing what the next one needs.

DESIGN

Schematic and board

Designed here, with our own component libraries and 3D models, so the board fits the space it has to live in.

CODE

Firmware

Written here for each device and the job it does.

INTERFACE

Settings in a browser

The device serves its own settings page over its own Wi-Fi, so settings can be changed from any phone or laptop.

UPDATES

Updates over the air

Encrypted update packages only. The device refuses an unencrypted image, so foreign firmware cannot be loaded into it.

BUS

Bus connection

CAN to the engine management, with the signals you need picked out and displayed. MaxxECU is the bus we know best.

MECHANICS

Enclosure

3D printed housings and brackets, designed together with the board.

03 / In the car

A device that lives on the bus

It listens to the engine management over CAN, picks out the signals the job needs and does its one thing with them: show, measure or control.

04 / Design details

Design details

The kind of detail that only gets made when the same people draw the board and the box.

One end faceAll connectors are carried on the same end, so the loom leaves in one direction and the other three sides can sit against anything.
A colour bandIdentical units get a printed band of their own colour, so they can be told apart across a car at a glance.
A cover that follows the boardThe printed cover is shaped around the components it protects and the space it has to fit.

05 / Technical

What it is made of

DesignSchematic and PCB layout in house, with our own 3D component libraries.
BusCAN, classic 500 kbit/s in the current products.
DisplaysFive inch touch, round gauges and AMOLED bar gauges have all been built.
SettingsBrowser page served by the device over its own Wi-Fi access point.
UpdatesOver the air, encrypted package enforced by the device.
Enclosure3D printed, designed alongside the board.
SupplyVehicle supply, protected for the installation.

06 / Availability

Availability

Displays and the thermocouple amplifier are products of their own and are sold in the shop. Everything else on this page is either our own development or work done to order.

Lighting electronics is built for competition and testing use. It is not type approved for road traffic.

Ask about it

Describe what the device has to do and where it will be fitted.
